Mythica A Quest For Heroes

Title: Mythica A Quest For Heroes (12) Year: 2014 Running Time: 89 minutes Director: Anne K Black Cast: Melanie Stone (Marek), Adam Johnson (Thane), Jake Stormoen (Dagen), Nicola Posener (Teela) Notes: Kevin Sorbo appears as Marek's mentor (and pops up throughout the series). Won two awards. Rating: 8 Thoughts:   In the first of the Mythica series, Marek discovers her own abilities as a classic quest group tries to find a captured woman.

This is the first in the series and has plenty in it to get you hooked. Yes, it follows a classic style, introducing the main heroes one by one. Yes, the lead is ignorant of her main abilities and slowly discovers them. The questing group also ends up being the cliched line-up of wizard, cleric, warrior and thief. But... The story is good enough, if ultimately a little predictable. But it is the acting that keeps this going. Stone is especially strong, showing Marek as vulnerable but resolute, and the other leads do everything well. There are no real surprises but as RPG converts go this is very good. It says it all that they crowd-funded the sequel and got their target quickly. Perhaps the sets look restrained by their budget but the narrative progresses well once the introductions are out of the way.

I came to this series late and immediately sought out the next two. That should say enough about it.

My biggest criticism would be the short part for Kevin Sorbo, clearly only to get his name attached to it to broaden the film's appeal. It's better than that.
